Black History Month Dinner Program on Tuesday, February 2, 7pm

The Alaska Black Chamber of Commerce is proud to announce our 2010 Black History Month Dinner Program, which will take place Tuesday, February 2, 2010, at 7 PM in the Hotel Captain Cook. This year we are honored to have as our guest speaker Reverend Dr. Samuel Billy Kyles.

Bridge Builders is an award-winning program in Anchorage is helping to create a safer, friendlier city. It’s called Bridge Builders, and its goal is to build “a community of friends” among all racial and cultural groups in Anchorage.
Bridge Builders was established in 1996 when Anchorage Mayor Rick Mystrom invited several African American and Caucasian ministers to dinner to talk about how to prevent racial tension. What began as a discussion of black and white relations soon expanded to a conversation about our many Anchorage citizens who represent a multitude of cultures and ethnic backgrounds. The group at the Mayor’s home that night decided to start a new initiative. They called it Bridge Builders, and the remarkable success of this grassroots campaign was one of the reasons that the Municipality of Anchorage won “All America City” honors in 2002.

The community of Anchorage is changing for the better and communities around the country have contacted us to discover how to start Bridge Builders in their city or town.

Meet the World in Anchorage.  Saturday, February 27, 2009, 11:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m., Anchorage Museum at Rasmuson Center. (Photos) As part of the Fur Rendezvous celebration in February, Bridge Builders hosts this free event to educate the public about the different cultures in Anchorage. Over 30 cultural booths are set up with displays from individual communities and staffed with cultural representatives to greet visitors and explain their customs, traditions, costumes and values. Many booths have activities such as calligraphy demonstrations, games, or origami (paper folding). Attendees are given a “passport” at the entrance that has an entry from each culture explaining customs and traditions; as visitors stop by each table, that culture’s passport page is stamped with a symbol from that culture. Ethnic entertainment is featured throughout the day, offering music and dance while people get to know their neighbors. Fun for the whole family!
