Angela Jimenez
Before moving to Anchorage well over a decade ago, Angela C. Jimenez was living in New York City, and was a reluctant welfare recipient who’d declared bankruptcy in the wake of a health-related crisis. She refused to be defeated, went to work at the New York Sheraton and the Waldorf-Astoria Hotels where she doggedly gained cashiering then accounting skills that resulted in a promotion to accounts receivable. Shortly after arriving in Anchorage 12 years ago, she began working on her associate degree in accounting at the University of Alaska Anchorage, while employed as the bookkeeper and assistant accountant with White & Associates, a CPA firm in Anchorage. Born to an entrepreneurial father on the Caribbean island of the Dominican Republic, Angela C. Jimenez, has turned her own entrepreneurial spirit into a series of remarkable achievements. Today in addition to her thriving Hispanic Service Center which offers tax, office and communications services, she owns AJ Travel, a superbly busy travel agency specializing in Caribbean destinations, and a Sales associate/Agent with RE/MAX Properties, Inc. “When I first met her in my previous position, I knew without any doubt that this young mother of three exquisitely-behaved daughters was going to go far in business,” says Jennifer Abbott, Small Business Regulations Coordinator with the State of Alaska Department of Commerce. “She had drive, passion, boundless creative energy, and an unwavering belief in her plan and in herself.” Today, politicians, community movers and shakers, and local lenders continuously seek out Angela’s community leadership and business skills. Having lived in Mountain View since her arrival here, Angela is fiercely loyal to her community and to seeing it develop into a first-class neighborhood. She is passionate about seeing Anchorage thrive as a multi-cultural city with opportunities for all; and about empowering Latin Americans to become full partners in the wealth and well-being of their city. Through her newspaper and advocacy, she keeps Hispanics up to date on issues about their rights, responsibilities, and privileges as American citizens, residents or visitors. To add her strength and creative spirit to all these efforts, Angela joined the boards of the Anchorage Community Land Trust; Special Services Council for Latin-Americans in Alaska; Bridge Builders of Alaska; Hispanic Affair Council of Alaska; Mountain View Revitalization Oversight Committee; Latino Lions Club of Alaska; Mountain View Community Council; and Anchorage School District Minority Education Concern Committee. In 2006, Angela C. Jimenez was named “Citizen of the Year” by The Dominican American National Roundtable, a national organization that recognizes Dominican Americans working toward the betterment of their communities while succeeding in business. She was also recognized by Bridge Builders of Anchorage for excellence in community service. |
